Scams and phishing

Calls about your business listing that are really a sales trap

The caller says your online listing is about to be deactivated, or needs to be verified today. Then the invoices start.

The short version

A caller warns that your business listing will be removed or is out of date. A yes on the call becomes an invoice.

How it works

Someone calls the business, often the front desk, claiming to be from a directory, a search listing service or a map provider. They say your listing is out of date, about to be removed or not showing up in searches. They just need to “verify” a few details.

Sometimes the call is recorded, and a simple “yes” is later presented as agreement to a paid listing. Sometimes they send a form that looks like a renewal but is really an order. Then invoices arrive, followed by collection threats.

Other versions arrive by mail or email, made to look like a bill from a service you already use.

What gives it away

  • Urgency about something you never signed up for. Free listings with major search and map services are not removed because of a missed phone call.
  • Pressure to say yes or confirm details on the spot.
  • An invoice for a service nobody in the business remembers ordering.

What to do

  • Do not agree to anything on an unexpected call. Ask for details in writing and say someone will call back.
  • Know who manages your listings and check them yourself by signing in to the real service.
  • Check invoices against orders before paying, and question anything you cannot trace.
  • Tell the front desk this scam exists, since they usually take the call.
