Networks and Wi-Fi
Why a home router is not enough for a business
It came free with the internet service, it was easy to set up, and it has worked fine for years. Mostly.

The short version
The router from the internet provider or the electronics store is built for a home. Businesses need more control, security and support.
What home routers are built for
A home router is designed to be cheap and simple: plug it in, get online. That is the right design for a household. For a business, the gaps show up quickly:
- Security features are basic. Few can filter threats or separate devices properly.
- Updates are unreliable. Many get security fixes rarely, or stop getting them after a short time, and few install them automatically.
- Nobody is watching it. If it is broken into, misbehaving or full of errors, nobody finds out.
- Limited control. Guest Wi-Fi, separate networks for cameras and phones, and remote access for staff are hard or impossible to set up well.
- It struggles under load when many people and devices are online, especially with video calls.
What a business setup includes
- A business firewall that inspects traffic, receives regular updates and can be managed remotely.
- Separate networks for staff, guests, phones and devices like cameras and printers.
- Business-grade Wi-Fi access points placed for coverage.
- Monitoring and management, so problems and updates are handled before they become outages.
The internet provider’s box can still bring the connection in. The business network should be built behind it.
