The real cost of free and cracked software
The paid version is expensive, and there is a free download right there. That download often comes with something extra.

The short version
Pirated software, key generators and downloads from unofficial sites are one of the most common ways malware gets onto computers.
Why it is risky
Cracked software is a paid program changed to skip licensing. Key generators are tools that make fake license keys. Both are made by people you know nothing about, and both are a favorite way to spread malware, because people expect to switch off warnings to run them.
Even genuinely free programs can be risky when downloaded from the wrong place. Copycat download sites and search ads often offer real programs bundled with adware or malware.
What can come with it
- Password stealers that take saved logins from the browser.
- Remote access tools that let someone else control the computer.
- Cryptocurrency miners that slow everything down.
- Ransomware.
- No updates, because the copy cannot get fixes from the maker.
There is also the licensing risk. Businesses that use unlicensed software can face audits and penalties.
What to do instead
- Ask IT first. There may already be a licensed tool that does the job, or a cheaper option.
- Download only from the maker’s own website or an official app store.
- Watch out for search ads that imitate download pages.
- Check before installing any program on a work computer, even a free one.
