Networks and Wi-Fi
The office internet is down
Nothing loads, Teams has disconnected and the phones may be down too.

The short version
When the internet drops, a few quick checks tell you whether it is the provider, the equipment or something inside the office.
First, check how widespread it is
- Is it everyone, or just you? If only you, restart your computer and check you are on the right Wi-Fi.
- Is it wired and wireless? If a computer plugged in by cable works but Wi-Fi does not, the problem is the Wi-Fi.
- Is it the whole building? Ask a neighboring business, or check the internet provider’s outage page on your phone.
Then
- Call your IT provider. They may already see the alert, and they can check the firewall and internet line remotely.
- Look at the equipment. Note which lights are on or red on the provider’s box and the firewall, and whether there was a power cut.
- Do not reset anything to factory settings. It can wipe the configuration and turn a short outage into a long one.
Keep working meanwhile
- Use a phone hotspot for urgent email and calls.
- Forward the main phone line to mobiles if the phones are down, if your system allows it.
- Work from home, if the outage is local to the office.
Afterward
If outages keep happening, ask about a backup internet connection from a second provider that takes over automatically.
