The business side of IT
Opening a second location: getting the technology right
The business is growing into a second office, store or site. The temptation is to set it up quickly and fix it later.

The short version
A second site should work like the first from day one, with the same security, without becoming a separate IT setup to manage.
Plan for one business across two places
The goal is that staff can work at either site in the same way: same sign-in, same files, same phone system, same security. Two separately managed setups double the work and the risk.
Checklist
- Order internet early, with a backup connection if the site matters to daily operations.
- Use the same network design and equipment as the first site, so both are managed the same way.
- Connect the sites securely if they need to share local systems, such as a server or printers.
- Extend the phone system so calls can be transferred between sites and the main number reaches both.
- Use cloud services for shared files where possible, so both sites see the same version.
- Apply the same security: multi-factor authentication, device protection, guest Wi-Fi kept separate.
- Plan for local support: who is the contact on site, and how is hardware replaced?
- Think about physical security for network equipment, especially in retail or shared buildings.
- Document both sites together, so anyone supporting them sees the whole picture.
