Your phone needs updates too

The update notice has been sitting on your phone for two weeks. It wants to restart at a bad time.

The short version

Phones with work email and sign-in apps are worth attacking. Keeping them updated closes the flaws attackers use.

Why it matters

Your phone probably has your work email, Teams, files and the app that approves your sign-ins. That makes it a target. Phone makers regularly fix security flaws, some of which are already being used by attackers when the fix comes out.

An update only protects you once it is installed.

What to do

  • Turn on automatic updates for the system and for apps.
  • Install system updates within a few days. Choose a time like overnight while charging.
  • Update apps from the official store only.
  • Check that your phone still gets updates. Older phones stop receiving security fixes after a few years. Once that happens, they should not hold work accounts.

On a personal phone

If you use your own phone for work email or sign-ins, the same applies. Your company may ask that the phone has a screen lock, current updates and a supported system version before work apps will run. That protects the business data on it, and it protects you too.
