Why “have you tried turning it off and on again?” works

Every help desk asks it. It sounds like a brush-off, and it fixes a surprising share of problems.

The short version

It is the oldest joke in IT support, and still the most useful first step. Here is why a restart fixes so much.

Why it works

Computers run many programs at once, each holding information in memory. Over hours and days, small things go wrong:

  • A program does not release memory it no longer needs, and the computer slows down.
  • A program gets stuck waiting for something that will never happen.
  • A network connection or device driver gets into a confused state.
  • An update is half-installed, waiting for a restart to finish.

A restart clears all of that and starts everything fresh from a known good state.

Restart, not just lid closed

Closing a laptop lid puts it to sleep. Everything stays in memory, including whatever was going wrong. Some computers can go weeks without a real restart. Use Restart from the Start menu.

When a restart is not enough

If the same problem keeps coming back after restarts, there is an underlying cause: a failing part, a bad update, a full disk or something else. Tell IT. “It happens every Tuesday afternoon” or “only when I open this file” is exactly the kind of detail that helps.
