The business side of IT

Buying licenses and hardware through an IT provider

Laptops and software licenses are easy to buy online. Buying them well, for a business, involves a few things a shopping cart does not.

The short version

Buying through a provider can mean the right equipment, set up to your standard, with warranties and renewals tracked, even without a managed agreement.

What can go wrong when buying online

  • Consumer models that lack business features such as management tools, longer warranties and parts availability.
  • The wrong license type, such as home versions of software used in a business, or licenses that do not include the security features you need.
  • Licenses paid for nobody, when people leave but their subscriptions keep renewing.
  • Warranties that lapse unnoticed, so repairs cost more than they should.

What a provider adds

  • Advice on what fits: the right model and specification for each role, and the right license level for the features you use.
  • Setup to your standard, ready to use out of the box.
  • Tracking of warranties, renewal dates and who has which license.
  • Support when something fails, including handling warranty claims.

You do not need a full managed agreement

Some businesses want their own staff to run IT day to day, but still want help choosing, buying and setting up the right equipment and licenses. That is a perfectly good way to work with an IT provider.
