The short version

IT may ask for your computer's name, model or Windows version. Here is where to find them in a few seconds.

On Windows

Computer name, Windows version and memory

  • Open Settings, then System, then About.
  • Device name is the computer name.
  • Under Windows specifications, you will see the edition and version.

Model and serial number

  • Look at the label on the bottom or back of the computer.
  • Or type System Information in the Start menu and open it.

On a Mac

  • Open the Apple menu, then About This Mac. You will see the model, chip, memory, serial number and macOS version.
  • The computer name is in System Settings, then General, then About, or Sharing.

On a phone

  • iPhone: Settings, then General, then About.
  • Android: Settings, then About phone.

Other things IT may ask

  • Are you on Wi-Fi or a cable?
  • Are you in the office or working remotely?
  • What was the exact error message? A screenshot is ideal.

Having these ready when you report a problem gets it fixed faster.
