Memory and storage are not the same thing

“My computer is out of memory” could mean two very different things. Here is how to tell which one you have.

The short version

Memory (RAM) is the computer's workspace. Storage is where files are kept. Knowing the difference helps when a computer is slow or full.

Memory (RAM)

Memory is the computer’s short-term workspace. Every program you have open, every browser tab and every document you are working on uses some.

  • It is fast and temporary. It empties when the computer turns off.
  • When it runs short, the computer slows down as it juggles what fits.
  • Signs you need more: slowness with many programs or tabs open, and improvement after closing some.

Storage

Storage is where files, programs and the operating system are kept, whether the computer is on or off. Most business computers now use a solid state drive, or SSD, which is much faster than an older hard drive.

  • It is permanent until you delete something.
  • When it is nearly full, updates fail, programs misbehave and everything can slow down.
  • Signs it is the problem: warnings about low disk space, failed updates, or a nearly full bar on the C: drive or Macintosh HD.

A simple comparison

Memory is the desk you work at. Storage is the filing cabinet. A bigger desk lets you have more open at once. A bigger cabinet lets you keep more.

Where to check

  • Windows: Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) shows memory use. Settings, then System, then Storage shows disk space.
  • Mac: Activity Monitor shows memory. System Settings, then General, then Storage shows disk space.
